Fire Service Bids Farewell - Delaware City / Smyrna

Thursday, September 3, 2015
Monday, January 5th, Delaware's Fire Service paid final respect to Michelle Smith, firefighter with the Delaware City Fire Company and member of the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown. From the sound of the last alarm in Delaware City, a ceremony that left many with tears in their eyes, the funeral for the Delaware City firefighter killed in the line of duty concluded with a procession of 135 emergency vehicles stretching for nearly five miles behind the Delaware City engine leading the procession of apparatus from fire departments throughout the State of Delaware, as well as departments from neighboring New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Along the way, firefighters from Odessa, Townsend, Middletown and Citizens Hose Company brought additional apparatus to overpasses along the procession route, each overpass draped with an American flag and firefighters stood to salute. This day, emergency service personnel, including firefighters, police officers, paramedics, dispatchers, doctors, politicians, as well as local citizens, family and friends paid final tribute to Michelle, whose Line of Duty Death shook the firefighting community throughout the state. An estimated 1,300 people assembled at Delaware City on Monday, with an even highter count over the past two days to show a display of fraternity commonly known throughout the fire service. Many there knew Michelle, while others in attendance did not. A day that was filled with sorrow, the fire service family stood tall and together to pay final tribute to our fallen sister.
