Thursday, September 3, 2015
Friday morning at 06:47hrs, Stations 1&27, Stations 4&24 for a Engine & Rescue, Station 26 for a Engine & Rescue, Engine 29, Station 44 for an Engine and Ladder, Station 10 for the RIT, and EMS Station 64 were alerted for a working house fire with subjects reported trapped on the roof at 7 East Cochran Street. The occupants were able to get off of the roof prior to the fire department arriving. Tower 27 was the first unit to respond at 06:50hrs with Assistant Chief Mullen having command. They arrived in under a minute with heavy fire conditions from the first floor of the three story residence and rapidly extending to the upper floors due to the balloon construction. The crew led off with a 2 1/2" line and knocked a large portion of the fire down from the exterior. Engine 27-5 was next in at 6:52hrs and dropped a supply line to the Tower Ladder from Cochran & Broad, and the crew placed two - 1 3/4" lines in service and began interior fire attack with the crew from the tower. Rescue 27 accessed the scene from South Cox Street, and their crew placed additional lines in service to the interior as well as to extinguish a vehicle next to the residence. Engine 26-2 secured an additional water source by completing a reverse lay from Engine 27-5 to a hydrant at West Cochran & South Cass. As additional units arrived, ground ladders and ventillation tasks were completed. The balloon construction and layout of the third floor made accessing the seat of the fire difficult, and crews needed to resort to attacking the fire from ground ladders and the roof. Five occupants of the home were taken to Christiana Hospital for evaluation. Crews from Middletown and all responding departments were on scene for 3 hours completing overhaul and hot spots within the residence. The Delaware State Fire Marshals office is investigating the cause of the fire. Responding apparatus consisted of: Tower 27, Engine 27-5, Rescue 27, Quint 1-7, Engine 1-6, Engine 27-3, Engine 26-2, Rescue 24, Engine 24-3, Engine 4-5, Engine 29-4, Engine 44-3, Ladder 44, Rescue 8, Engine 15-5, KM Engine 3, BLS units - A3, A64, A15, B4, ALS-22, ALS-25, Medic 5B and Medic 5A.
